Chinese female tourist drowns in Indonesia while looking for camera

East Kalimantan police said on May 3 local time that a 30-year-old Chinese tourist who went missing while diving in Kakaban Island, East Kalimantan, has been found drowned.

According to reports, the deceased tourist is named Zhang Xiaohan (transliteration, the same below). During a leisure diving trip near Kakaban Island, she found that her GoPro fell into the sea and dived into the sea to retrieve her camera.

The local search and rescue agency BasarnasBalikpapan immediately organized a search and rescue after Zhang Xiaohan disappeared. The director of the agency told reporters that Zhang Xiaohan’s body was found 87 meters below the water surface.

The director of the agency said: “We have sent out all the divers of the joint search and rescue team. Despite this, the initial attempt to salvage the body was unsuccessful due to the deep depth.”

The joint search and rescue team then made several diving salvage attempts and finally successfully salvaged Zhang Xiaohan’s body ashore. According to the director of the agency, the place where the body was found is the most popular diving route in the area.

Zhang Xiaohan’s body was transported to a port in Belau County by a rescue agency’s speedboat and then sent to a local hospital for further examination and identification.

According to the police, Zhang Xiaohan’s GoPro was also found and recorded the last video of Zhang Xiaohan fighting against the strong underwater undercurrent before his death. However, the police are still contacting the victims’ families and will not release this video and other details before then.
