Indonesia officially abolishes Jakarta’s status as the capital and sets it up as a special zone

The Indonesian Parliament passed a bill on the 19th to officially abolish Jakarta’s status as the capital and set it up as a special zone.

Indonesian Parliament Deputy Speaker Kadir said after the plenary session of the Parliament: “Jakarta’s status is no longer the capital, but a special zone. We have moved the capital to Nusantara.”

Indonesian Interior Minister Karnavian said that Jakarta will undergo a transition from the capital to the status of a special zone. Although Jakarta is no longer the capital, it will remain a center of economic and cultural activities and will maintain its strategic appeal and important position in national affairs.

Nusantara, the new capital of Indonesia, is located in North Penajam Pasir District, East Kalimantan Province, and is still under construction. The Indonesian government plans to start moving civil servants to the new capital in early 2025.

In order to alleviate the difficulties faced by the development of the capital and promote the balanced development of the country, the Indonesian government announced in 2019 that the administrative capital would be moved from Jakarta to a forest hinterland in East Kalimantan Province. The construction of the new capital, Nusantara, officially started in mid-2022. It will be developed in five phases and is scheduled to be completed in 2045. The population is expected to exceed 2 million after completion.
